How to Choose an Ahrefs Alternative for Link Audits

Compare three routes for link audits and build an anchor-text review table from six real rows, with clear limits on what the data proves.

How to Choose an Ahrefs Alternative for Link Audits

Choose a link-audit workflow and get a small anchor table first. Paste this into your agent:

Set up https://monid.ai/SKILL.md, and then use Monid to compare the top three anchor texts for example.com and iana.org. Use domain scope and sort by referring domains descending. Preserve blank anchors and null dates. Return the raw fields and a separate review column. Ask before expanding the row budget.

SEO managers comparing backlinks, growth marketers reviewing competitors, and agency founders preparing client reports face the same choice: which part of the work needs replacing? If your search for an ahrefs alternative starts with two domains and three leading anchors each, a six-row sample answers a narrower question than a complete platform evaluation.

A manual export leaves you to normalize scope, preserve missing values, and explain the result. Switching suppliers leaves another problem: the replacement report needs its own baseline rather than being pasted into an existing trend line.

We'll compare three routes and build an anchor review through Monid, the OpenRouter for agent tools. It supplies the Ahrefs anchor aggregates used here; it does not supply an independent backlink index or replace a complete SEO workspace. Define the job, test a small table, then choose the working environment.

Here is the end state preview from our October 29 test:

How to define your Ahrefs alternative before comparing tools

Choose by the output you need to hand to another person, then compare tools against that output. This is the Monid blog; our first choice uses our own service and still gets its source data from Ahrefs.

Separate access from data independence

An alternative access route keeps the underlying source while changing how you retrieve the report. An independent research tool changes the source as well as the interface. Those are different purchasing decisions, and the measured workflow below addresses the first.

Write down whether you need a spreadsheet for an agent, an interface for an analyst, or evidence from another crawler. Do that before you compare prices or count features.

Use four selection criteria

Keep your first trial focused on these four questions:

  • Source: Does the task require Ahrefs observations or another source?
  • Output: Do you need anchor aggregates, individual linking pages, or a broader workspace?
  • Scope: Are you comparing one page, a whole domain, or its subdomains?
  • Budget: Can you bound the returned rows before requesting the report?

The three choices below serve different jobs. Their order follows the small anchor-table task rather than an accuracy ranking. We did not benchmark crawler coverage, freshness, or agreement between vendors.

How to use Monid for an anchor-text review

Use Monid when your deliverable is Ahrefs anchor data inside an agent or script. The Ahrefs anchor report groups backlinks by anchor text, with one row per distinct anchor; an endpoint is simply the callable operation that produces the report.

Pricing: $0.005805 per returned row, Verified 2026-10-29 on the Ahrefs tools page. Inspection declares no request minimum and no charge for empty results.

Features: Target scope, bounded row limits, sorting, and anchor-level referring-domain and link counts. The output contains aggregates rather than individual linking pages. Next step: Use the bounded prompt above before expanding your request.

Step 1. Connect your agent or install the CLI

For agents: Get a key at app.monid.ai, then give your agent the setup line and key through its credential mechanism; the agent quickstart explains setup.

set up https://monid.ai/SKILL.md

For humans: Install the CLI and save your key as described in the CLI quickstart.

npm install -g @monid-ai/cli
monid keys add --label main --key <your-api-key>

Step 2. Give your agent a bounded comparison

Use mode=domain, limit=3, and order_by=refdomains:desc so both targets have the same scope, row cap, and ordering. Set a small limit when testing; the inspected default is 100 rows, which is unnecessary for this first comparison.

Keep protocol=both, the default, to include HTTP and HTTPS observations. Choose exact for one URL, prefix for a URL branch, or subdomains when the task includes subdomains; changing scope changes the question your table answers.

Step 3. Retrieve the sample and check the bill

Ask the agent to retrieve three rows per target, retain the response and run identifier, and stop after those two calls. Both calls completed with HTTP 200 on October 29; provider execution took 3.990 seconds for example.com and 2.039 seconds for iana.org.

Step 4. Read and export the table

Keep raw fields beside your interpretation when exporting to CSV or a spreadsheet. These are all six rows returned by our two calls, with the empty string labelled for readability and dates shortened to calendar dates.

Each run billed three units at $0.005805 per unit; the two recorded charges totalled $0.03483, Verified 2026-10-29. There were six returned rows, no empty responses, and no failed calls in this test.

Editorial action: Keep the blank example.com anchor visible and review its context before judging it. Label IANA's leading rows as organization-name and URL anchors, without a verdict about the quality of their linking pages.

For authority scores and referring-domain records beyond this table, use the separate Ahrefs domain and backlink guide. Those are different reports, not extra fields hidden inside these anchor rows.

Choose Semrush when you want to investigate backlinks and competitor gaps in a research interface. Its official backlink feature page describes backlink, referring-domain, anchor-text and competitor-gap research.

Choose a research workspace

Semrush is a candidate when the deliverable includes exploring linking pages and finding domains that link to competitors. That investigation goes beyond the aggregate rows tested here. Evaluate it with a real client question and ask the analyst to produce the report they would actually send.

Pricing: Evaluate the vendor's current access terms; this guide quotes no plan price and includes no paid Semrush test.

Features: Backlink inspection, referring-domain research, and competitor backlink gaps. Next step: Open the official feature page and evaluate your required workflow there.

Start a separate baseline

Keep the provider name attached to exported metrics when changing research tools. Do not label differences between a Semrush report and an Ahrefs report as newly gained or lost links without examining the records.

This is a comparison rule, not a claim that one source finds more links. Request the same target scope and observation date, then investigate disagreements at the source-page level. Evaluate the replacement on your sites rather than assuming vendor-wide accuracy.

When to choose Bing Webmaster Tools for your site

Choose Bing Webmaster Tools when your task is to investigate your site's backlink report in a webmaster workflow. Microsoft's Backlinks help describes referring-page counts, referring domains, anchor texts, and source-to-target link details.

Start with the relevant report

If your working question is which anchors Bing detects pointing at your site, this is a relevant place to start. Keep that source label in any report you share, so the recipient understands what the counts describe.

Pricing: No price comparison is made here; assess access within the webmaster service.

Features: Backlink counts, anchor-text information, and referring-domain investigation described in Microsoft's help. Next step: Open your site's Backlinks report and compare its fields with the columns your reviewer needs.

Keep the investigation focused

A webmaster report and an agent-ready anchor export serve different routines. The first fits a person investigating a site within that service; the second fits a repeatable data retrieval step. Neither choice establishes a complete record of every link on the web.

How to read the anchor table without overclaiming

Read this sample as leading anchor groups, not as a complete distribution. The three-row cap is a retrieval boundary, so the table has no denominator for calculating each anchor's share of the entire profile.

IANA's leading anchor has 4,618,684 links from 6,654 referring domains. The business conclusion is that this link total includes repeated links within the anchor group; it does not count independent websites.

Use referring-domain counts to prioritize anchor groups for review, then inspect linking pages before deciding an action. Do not add domain counts across anchor rows as a unique-domain total: the same domain can use more than one anchor.

Preserve missing values and dates

All six last_seen values returned as null. Keep those cells empty or explicitly null; do not replace them with today's date or call those links lost.

An empty anchor is also a returned value, not a missing response. Keep the original empty string in raw data and put reader-friendly labels in a separate column. That preserves the distinction between observations and your annotations.

When should you use something else?

Use another route when the missing part of your task is the research environment, independent observations, or individual source-page evidence. Monid supplies the tested access step; the reader still owns the audit decision.

Keep Ahrefs when its workspace is the job

Stay with the Ahrefs Site Explorer workspace when you need its broader website research interface. Its official page describes link-profile research alongside organic and paid-traffic exploration. The anchor operation demonstrated here does not reproduce that environment.

When your comparison mixes keyword research with backlink analysis, the Ahrefs versus KWFinder guide separates those jobs. Choose the link workflow and keyword workflow independently before declaring one tool a complete substitute.

Keep judgment outside the automation

An agent can preserve fields and propose review labels, but these rows contain no source-page context or diagnosis of a search penalty. Do not turn a high count, a blank anchor, or a null date into an instruction to remove links.

Keep a human review column for the evidence needed next. That makes the table an investigation queue rather than a set of unsupported verdicts. Your next action is to obtain context, not to automate a link-removal decision from counts alone.

Which tool should you use for each job?

Choose the output that matches your next decision. The tested Ahrefs operation through Monid has a bounded per-row bill; the other entries are research routes assessed from official descriptions.

Conclusion

You now have three routes to evaluate and a six-row table demonstrating the automated route. Repeat the comparison with consistent scope and an explicit row budget, keeping raw values separate from editorial actions. The pitch's one-minute allowance is a planning assumption excluding account creation; no hours-saved estimate is claimed because we measured no manual baseline. Choose the route that gives your next reviewer the evidence needed to make a decision.

FAQ

Is this an independent Ahrefs alternative?

No. This Monid workflow retrieves Ahrefs anchor data. Choose another source when independent backlink observations are required.

Can I check anchor text for free?

Discovery and inspection are free; retrieving this report is paid. The Ahrefs tool page shows its current per-row price. Our successful calls billed exactly the returned rows.

Do I need to write code?

No. Give the opening prompt to an agent with your configured key. For a script, the tested command below retrieves the first sample; change the target to iana.org for the second.

monid discover -q "ahrefs alternative" -l 5 -j --include-unavailable
monid inspect -p ahrefs -e /site-explorer/anchors
monid run -p ahrefs -e /site-explorer/anchors --query '{"target":"example.com","mode":"domain","limit":3,"order_by":"refdomains:desc"}' -w
How many anchors can I retrieve at once?

The inspected limit is 1 to 100 rows for one target. Our test requested three per domain. Increasing the limit increases the permitted returned-row spend.

Are empty results and failed calls charged?

Inspection states that empty results are free. Both test calls succeeded and returned three billed rows each; this test establishes no failed-call billing rule.

Can I schedule the same comparison?

Yes, place the retrieval step in your own scheduler. Store target, scope, date, run identifier and raw output together so repeated reports remain comparable.

Does a blank anchor mean a bad backlink?

No. A blank value alone does not establish link quality. Review the underlying linking page before assigning an action, and preserve the returned value in your export.
